The wave split and circled the island. People on the bridge cheered on the surfers who let themselves be carried by it. It flowed past Le Mont-Saint-Michel and dissipated along the coastline. As far as Sandrine could see, water covered the mudflat.

"The plaza is currently still about a foot above the water level, but you should probably get going. It may be another half an hour before the sea floods the road and the bridge’s end. You won't be able to leave here without getting wet."

"Good idea." She definitely didn't want to be stuck on Le Mont for the next four or five hours until the ebb tide revealed the passage to the mainland again. "What's the quickest way to my motorcycle?"

"Where did you park?"

"In the parking lot beneath the Abbot’s building."

"That's easy. Just continue along this path. It leads directly to the parking lot below the abbey. It won't take you more than ten minutes."

"Thank you."

She bid her farewell and marched along the wall, turning left onto the path that took her to the east side of the town. At the end of the long staircase at the foot of the abbey, her motorcycle was waiting for her.

Sandrine mounted it and drove off as a police officer directed her through. The first waves were already spilling over the road, and tourists were queued up in long lines at the bus stop.
